Matthew Goetz Nominated for NCTE’s High School Teacher of Excellence Award

While Upper School English teacher and Admissions Associate Matthew Goetz has only just completed his first year at Chase Collegiate, he has been making an impact across the globe for years. Always interested in equity, cultural hierarchies and how young people can understand themselves and others, Mr. Goetz has made waves in education. As a reflection of this inspiring work, Mr. Goetz has been nominated for the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) High School Teacher of Excellence award by the Connecticut Council of Teachers of English.

With a life full of adventures—including time served as Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy—Mr. Goetz eventually found himself in China, where he discovered that his students were interested in conversing about social issues and how they understand themselves and others. He brought this passion back to Chase Collegiate, where he has spearheaded new course offerings that open opportunities for these discussions. 

"I was drawn to Chase because I sensed a fearless desire to expand the breadth of its course offerings to reflect more broadly both the diversity of its current students and those whom it seeks to enroll," said Goetz. "Chase continually encourages its faculty to design new opportunities for teaching and learning that take root in our own research interests and that partner with those of our students."

Chase Collegiate is excited that Mr. Goetz has been recognized for this important work and wishes him all the luck in his running for the NCTE High School Teacher of Excellence award! The award will be presented at the NCTE convention in November.
